Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, Buys two islands for refugees

Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, who offered to buy a 
Mediterranean island to help hundreds of thousands of Syrians fleeing 
war, said on Monday he was in talks to buy two private Greek islands.<br />
The
 businessman announced earlier this month he was looking to buy an 
island which would "host the migrants and provide jobs for them building
 their new country".<br />
More than 2 300 people have died at sea 
trying to reach Europe since January, many of them Syrians fleeing their
 country's four-and-a-half year conflict.<br />
A statement from 
Sawiris' company on Monday said he had "identified two privately owned 
Greek islands that constitute a good opportunity for the project.<br />
"We have corresponded with the owners and expressed our interest to go into negotiation with them," it said.<br />
The
 tycoon said he had been approached by the UN's refugee agency UNHCR to 
co-operate on the project, which he estimates would require $100m to get
 off the ground. <br />
Sawiris is the chief executive of Orascom TMT, 
which operates mobile telephone networks in a number of Middle Eastern 
and African countries plus Korea, as well as underwater communications 
networks.<br />
He also owns an Egyptian television channel.

Yaounde - Officials in Cameroon's north on Monday praised a local 
self-defence group for confronting Boko Haram militants during a suicide
 bombing attack over the weekend, a move they said greatly reduced 
fatalities.<br />
Others in the region should follow suit in the face of
 a seemingly constant onslaught of attacks from the Nigeria-based 
extremists, said Far North Region Governor Midjiyawa Bakari.<br />
"We 
are calling on the population to constitute themselves in vigilante 
groups and be each other's keeper as Boko Haram lives its last days," 
Bakari said.<br />
Northern Cameroon borders Nigeria and has been targeted repeatedly by Boko Haram, including seven attacks in the past five days.<br />
On
 Sunday, suicide bombers hit the town of Kolofata, killing nine 
civilians and wounding at least 18. But they were prevented from causing
 further bloodshed when members of a self-defence group in the town 
blocked them from heading to the market, said Ahmidou Fouman, one of the
 group's members.<br />
"We detected three strange teenage boys and a 
girl dressed like a Muslim in our town. They pretended to be fetching 
water from a stream and when some members of our group went to search 
them, the girl detonated a bomb killing some of us," Fouman said.<br />
Bakari,
 the governor, said many more people would have died without the group's
 intervention. "I am congratulating the vigilante committee whose 
courage reduced the shock of the Boko Haram attack and I am inviting 
everyone to emulate their example," he said.<br />
In addition to the 
suicide bombing, suspected Boko Haram militants have looted property and
 cattle and burned homes in the border region in recent days.<br />
Cameroon
 is one of five countries contributing troops to a regional force 
intended to wipe out Boko Haram, which became an affiliate of the ISIS 
earlier this year

Police in Zimbabwe have arrested Theo Bronkhorst, the 
professional hunter behind the killing of Cecil the lion, following the 
discovery of 29 sable antelope allegedly being smuggled to South Africa,
 his lawyer said on Tuesday.<br />
Advocate Perpetua Dube said: "He’s been arrested. He’s detained at Hillside Police station." <br />
Bronkhorst
 was arrested on Monday but charges against him are yet to be clarified,
 Dube said in a telephone interview from Bulawayo.<br />
“The police 
from Beitbridge will determine that [when he will be brought to court]. I
 haven’t had a meeting with them. They were on their way last night,” 
she added.<br />
Separate reports say that the professional hunter is under suspicion for illegally importing 29 sables from Zambia.<br />
<strong>Three SA men detained</strong><br />
Conservation
 group the Bhejane Trust confirmed the sable were found in three 4x4 
trucks that were trying to illegally cross the South African border near
 Beitbridge at the weekend.<br />
Three South African men, all in their forties, are being held for trying to illegally export the animals.<br />
Two of the animals had already died by the time the trucks were intercepted, the Bhejane Trust said.<br />
It claimed the sables were originally imported from Zambia. "The Zimbabwean import papers could be dodgy," the group added.<br />
Officials
 from the Bhejane Trust, which operates in the Victoria Falls and Hwange
 area, were not available for comment early on Tuesday. According to the
 trust, the animals had been kept in a boma on a farm Bronkhorst was 
living on outside Victoria Falls.<br />
<strong>Cecil case</strong><br />
Bronkhorst
 is already due back in court at the end of the month for his part in 
the killing of Zimbabwe's most famous lion in early July in Hwange 
National Park.<br />
Bronkhorst's client was US dentist Walter Palmer, 
who insists he believed the hunt - first with a bow and arrow and then 
with a gun - was legal. Palmer was a focus of global hatred when outrage
 over the 13-year-old lion's killing was at its peak at the beginning of
 August.<br />
Invent Africa Safaris
 said in a post to Facebook: "The trucks got stuck in thick sand about 
21 kilometres west of Beitbridge while attempting to cross the Limpopo 
River illegally, and were then confiscated by Zimbabwean police.<br />
"The
 sable, thought to be of the sub-species kirkii, which typically have 
longer horns than their southern cousins, may well be part of a larger 
consignment South African breeders and hunters have been trying to 
smuggle out of Zambia since 2009."<br />
Bronkhorst will appear in court
 on September 28 in connection with the Cecil case. Though the Zimbabwe 
authorities earlier indicated their desire to extradite dentist Palmer, 
they now seem to have abandoned the idea.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Sani Usman, the army said the insurgents began surrendering when they realised that the ‘new strategies’ being deployed by soldiers was becoming successful.<br />

The suspect, identified as Omondi<br>
Nyakondi, was cornered by members<br>
of the public who allegedly found him<br>
defiling her inside his bar.<br>
According to Bondo Deputy County<br>
Commissioner Samson Akatch,<br>
Omondi is said to have lured the minor<br>
into the bar with sweets. According to<br>
reports, Omondi has been abusing the<br>
minor for the past 6 months.<br>
Akatch said that he was acting from a<br>
tip off the members of the public when<br>
he stormed the bar and caught the<br>
suspect red handed. They pounced on<br>
the suspect with kicks and blows, and<br>
he pleaded for forgiveness.<br>
Akatch said the girl has been taken to<br>
Bondo Sub County Hospital for medical<br>
tests and treatment. He said that the<br>
suspect will be arraigned in court for<br>
defilement charges as soon as they<br>
complete investigations into the<br>

suspect longer in order to conduct<br>
more tests on him and his victims.<br>
The suspect is linked to a video that<br>
showed “doctor” raping a sedated<br>
patient at the Prestige Health Care<br>
clinic in Githurai 44.<br>
The video sparked widespread<br>
condemnation and outrage when it<br>
was first aired by Citizen TV on<br>
Sunday night.<br>
Mugo Wa Wairimu was arrested on<br>
Thursday in Gitungo hotel, in Limuru<br>
town, where he was having lunch after<br>
wananchi informed the police of his<br>
whereabouts.</p>

Mt. Kenya West Diocese has<br>
suspended five of its clergymen<br>
accused of engaging in<br>
homosexuality.<br>
The five clergymen, of whom four are<br>
married with children, were found<br>
guilty of engaging in the unlawful<br>
practice with their faithful by the<br>
church standing committee of the<br>
synod.<br>
Communicating the decision to the<br>
media on Thursday, the Diocese Head<br>
Bishop Joseph Kagunda said there<br>
were sufficient grounds to suspend the<br>
five following evidence presented by<br>
various witnesses to the diocesan<br>
tribunal that some of them were<br>
engaging in the practice.<br>
Bishop Kagunda said the first report<br>
came in mid-August when a young<br>
man came seeking for prayers to be<br>
freed from guilt consciousness after<br>
he was lured into the act by one of the<br>
church senior clergy.<br>
He said in course of investigations<br>
instituted against the accused<br>
clergyman, four others were adversely<br>
mentioned and after follow up, some<br>
confessed their involvement in the<br>
practice while others went through full<br>
trial.</p>

Sh1 million. That’s Sh109,000 for<br>
each of the wheelbarrows. On<br>
average, an ordinary wheelbarrow<br>
costs Sh2,000 and Sh4,000 when it is<br>
reinforced.<br>
At first, the governor defended the<br>
purchase saying the wheelbarrows<br>
were special.<br>
“The information that I am getting from<br>
the veterinary department is that these<br>
are not the ordinary wheelbarrows that<br>
we know. These are wheelbarrows<br>
that are made of stainless, non-<br>
carcinogenic material and are used in<br>
the food industry,” said Mr Lusaka.<br>
He later suspended the officials<br>
involved and asked them to explain<br>
the purchase.<br>
4. Sh50 million ‘Kidero grass’<br>
We all know about this one. The<br>
Nairobi County Government spent<br>
Sh50 million on buying and planting<br>
grass in the CBD ahead of US<br>
President Barack Obamas’ visit in<br>
July.<br>
This did not sit well with Nairobi<br>
residents and they vehemently<br>
accused the County Government of<br>
mismanagement of funds, an<br>
allegation that the Governor denied.<br>
Word has it that the county is fetching<br>
Sh10 million weekly from fining<br>
people who step on it.<br>
5. Tharaka Nithi MCAs relaxing Sh5<br>
million Egypt trip<br>
The MCAs went to Egypt to relax their<br>
mind after a tiring 2014/2015 financial<br>
year. The trip that was funded by the<br>
County Assembly had the MCAs<br>
unaccounted for Sh5 million during the<br>
trip.<br>
6. Kiambu MCAs trip to Israel to fetch<br>
‘holy water’<br>
In 2014, some of the MCAs in the<br>
Kiambu Government went to Israel on<br>
an official visit. They fetched “holy<br>
water” and brought some to the MCAs’<br>
who did not participate in the trip.<br>
Well, as always the trip had been<br>
funded by taxpayers money.<br>

The governor’s office has already<br>
advertised to lease choppers. One of<br>

series of tweets saying; “Sorry for the<br>
wrong information circulating in the<br>
social media about the Fire Fighting<br>
Trucks and equipment. We purchased<br>
three of them at KES 7M each and it<br>

bowsers. The trucks are well suited<br>
for Bomet’s terrain. And budget.”<br>

Joshua Arap Sang.<br>
Media reports late on Thursday<br>
evening indicate that Bensouda has<br>
notified the Trial Chamber, parties and<br>
participants of the decision.<br>
The implication is that Bensoda has no<br>
more evidence to present to the court<br>
and has handed back to the Trial<br>
Chamber to invite the defense to file a<br>
no case to answer motion or start<br>
calling their witnesses.<br>
Either way defense will have to await<br>
the outcome of their appeal against<br>
admission of prior recorded<br>
testimony.</p>

Kirimi, a second year student at Mt.<br>
Kenya University murdered his<br>
girlfriend before taking his own life.<br>
“They came home on Wednesday<br>
evening and I cooked some eggs for<br>
them as usual they are used to spend<br>
their night at my daughters house<br>
when Kirimi is on holidays so I didn’t<br>
bother them much only to find them<br>
dead the following day,” said Joyce<br>
Muthenya, the girl’s mother.<br>
When they stopped by before going to<br>
the girl’s house that night, they all<br>
looked jovial. The teary-eyed mother<br>
said that she did not notice any<br>
quarrel between them.<br>
“They looked happy and my daughter<br>
did not hint anything to me until she<br>
was murdered. Her body was lying<br>
naked on the bed with a bed sheet tied<br>
around her neck a clear indication she<br>
was struggled,” said Muthenya.<br>
She said they suspected Kirimi<br>
committed suicide by taking a<br>
herbicide after they found an empty<br>
sachet of the chemical on the table<br>
and a bottle of a used juice.<br>
“We had to break the door after waking<br>
them up without an answer and that’s<br>
when we discovered something was<br>
wrong at noon,” her mother added.<br>
Area Chief Jonathan Kirimi said<br>
investigations have been launched but<br>
preliminary report revealed that the<br>
deceased had issued murder threats<br>
to his lover accusing her of cheating.<br>
According to a villager Gitonga<br>
M’Ituuru, the deceased was allegedly<br>
heard claiming that someone was<br>
cheating with his girlfriend<br>
Kirimi’s father Geoffrey Meeme said<br>
the news of his son’s death had<br>

Rwanda’s Ministry of Education,<br>

education regulator — has issued a<br>
notice suspending Mt. Kenya<br>
University from offering undergraduate<br>
courses in nursing, pharmacy and<br>
medical laboratory sciences as well<br>

The regulator also moved to shut down<br>
MKU’s newly opened Rusizi Campus<br>
saying it was established “without<br>
fulfilling the due requirements.”<br>
HEC declined to reveal the number of<br>
students affected by the ban on the<br>
five courses, whether the ban affects<br>
both new and continuing students and<br>
the time frame given to MKU to<br>
address the issues raised.<br>
”We have got an obligation to do our<br>
regulatory duties without promoting or<br>
defaming any institution,” HEC<br>
executive director Innocent Mugisha<br>
told the Business Daily in an<br>
interview.<br>
The disciplinary and quality<br>
assurance measures only relate to<br>
MKU’s operations in Rwanda, where<br>
HEC has powers to regulate higher<br>
education.<br>
MKU founder and chairman Simon<br>
Gicharu promised to shed more light<br>
on the matter upon his return from a<br>
trip to India.<br>
The MKU Kigali Campus was opened<br>
in 2010 and mainly offers courses in<br>
health education and Executive MBA<br>
programmes. It has more than 4,000<br>
learners in three locations — Kicukiro,<br>
Camp Kigali and Town Centre — and<br>
was about to open a fourth, Rusizi,<br>
when it ran into trouble.<br>
Rwanda has a few public tertiary<br>
institutions including the University of<br>
Rwanda, integrated polytechnics,<br>
Institute of Legal Practice and<br>
Development and three nursing<br>
schools. The nascent east African<br>
economy has 15 private universities.<br>
Kenya’s Commission for University<br>
Education (CUE) secretary David Some<br>
declined to comment on the matter.<br>
The revelations are likely to raise<br>
anxiety among MKU’s recent<br>
graduates and learners currently<br>
enrolled in the affected programmes,<br>
given that these courses are also<br>
offered in Kenya.<br>
The development also leaves parents<br>
and guardians in a cloud of uncertainty<br>
over their investment in these<br>
courses.<br>
Nairobi-based professional bodies in<br>
the named health sciences fields —<br>
which accredit colleges and licence<br>
graduates in their respective trades —<br>
weighed in on the matter saying they<br>
plan a fresh audit on the affected<br>
courses at MKU.<br>
MKU is one of Kenya’s biggest<br>
privately held universities with a<br>
student body of about 52,000. It<br>
started in 1996 as Thika Institute of<br>
Technology, a mid-level college. It<br>
was chartered in January 2011 by<br>
President Mwai Kibaki.<br>
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board<br>
(PPB) said it will send a team to<br>
review the pharmacy programme at<br>
MKU once it gets details from Rwanda<br>

that he will vie for the Presidency<br>
because Uhuru has demonstrated<br>
that he doesn’t care about workers<br>
in Kenya.<br>
Atwoli said other Kenyans are<br>
ready to take up the fight for<br>
workers' rights if the Jubilee<br>
administration cannot.<br>
"But if it is difficult, there is a<br>
simple solution. I have never<br>
aspired for any political office but<br>
let not the elected leadership push<br>
